چکیده

The black hole (BH) mass in the centre of AGN has been estimated for a sample of radio-selected flat-spectrum quasars to investigate the relationship between BH mass and radio properties of quasars. We have used the virial assumption with measurements of the Hβ FWHM and luminosity to estimate the central BH mass. In contrast to previous studies we find no correlation between BH mass and radio power in these AGN. We find a range in BH mass similar to that seen in radio-quiet quasars from previous studies. We believe the reason that the low BH mass radio-loud quasars have not been measured in previous studies is due to optical selection effects which tend to miss the less optically luminous radio-loud sources. On the black-hole mass – radio luminosity relation for flat-spectrum radio-loud quasars

A new analysis of the connection between black-hole mass and radio luminosity in radioselected flat-spectrum quasars (FSQ) is presented. In contrast to recent claims in the literature, we find no evidence that the black-hole masses of radio-selected FSQ are systematically lower that those of luminous optically-selected radio-loud quasars. The black-hole masses of the FSQ are estimated via the v...

The relationship between radio luminosity and black-hole mass in optically-selected quasars

Using a sample of more than 6000 quasars from the Sloan digital sky survey (SDSS) we compare the black-hole mass distributions of radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars. Based on the virial black-hole mass estimator the radio-loud quasars (RLQs) are found to harbour systematically more massive black holes than radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) with very high significance (≫ 99.99%), with mean black-hole m...

The production mechanism of radio jets in AGN and quasar grand unification

Recent advances in estimating black hole masses for AGN show that radio luminosity is dependent on black hole mass and accretion rate. In this paper we outline a possible scheme for unifying radio-quiet and radio-loud AGN. We take the “optimistic” view that the mass and spin of the central black hole, the accretion rate onto it, plus orientation and a weak environmental dependence, fully determ...

The Optical-uv Emissivity of Quasars: Dependence on Black Hole Mass and Radio Loudness

We analyzed a large sample of radio-loud and radio-quiet quasar spectra at redshift 1.0 ≤ z ≤ 1.2 to compare the inferred underlying quasar continuum slopes (after removal of the host galaxy contribution) with accretion disk models. The latter predict redder (decreasing) α3000 continuum slopes (Lν ∝ να at 3000Å) with increasing black hole mass, bluer α3000 with increasing luminosity at 3000Å, a...

The black-hole masses of Seyfert galaxies and quasars

The central black-hole masses of a sample of 30 luminous quasars are estimated using Hβ fwhm measurements from a combination of new and previously-published nuclear spectra. The quasar black-hole mass estimates are combined with reverberationmapping measurements for a sample of Seyfert galaxies (Wandel, Peterson & Malkan 1999) in order to study AGN black-hole masses over a wide range in nuclear...
